Horse Pack Trips
Riding and Camping in Idaho’s Backcountry
Unplug, ride deep, and experience Idaho’s wilderness
Experience Idaho’s wilderness the traditional way with a multi-day horseback pack trip led by Rawhide Outfitters. Our 2-and 3-day overnight pack trips offer the chance to spend extended time in the saddle while exploring scenic mountain terrain, wildlife-rich valleys, and remote backcountry landscapes near Salmon, Idaho.
Guests stay in comfortable mountain camps featuring large wall tents with cots and a solar shower, blending rustic adventure with thoughtful comfort. These trips are designed for guests who want to slow down, disconnect, and fully experience life in the Idaho backcountry.
The Pack Trip Experience
Days are spent riding gentle, sure-footed mountain horses along scenic trails, with opportunities for hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing along the way. Early mornings and evenings often bring sightings of elk, deer, antelope, and, on occasion, mountain goats or sheep.
Two of our most popular pack trip destinations are Cow Creek Camp and Hat Creek Lakes Camp. Both offer spectacular mountain scenery, crystal-clear high lakes perfect for fishing and miles of scenic trails to ride. Meals are fresh, hearty and tailored to guests preferences. Before your adventure begins, you’ll be asked to complete a menu questionnaire to insure your meals are according to your likes and tastes.
Our Cow Creek Camp is located in the Lemhi Range of the Rocky Mountains The trailhead is just a 37 miles drive from Salmon. From there, it’s about a 1 1/2 hours ride to camp. Our comfortable wall tent camp sits in a picturesque meadow, with Cow Creek flowing right through it. A 2 hour ride from camp takes you to stunning Goat Lake where trout fishing is at its finest.
Hat Creek Lakes Camp, nestled in the Salmon River Range of the Rocky Mountains is a 1 ¼ hour drive from Challis to the trailhead. From there, it’s about a 2 hour ride to camp.
Guests stay in specious tepee- style tents, located in a beautiful meadow where the mountain air is so fresh and invigorating. From camp you can explore 5 pristine lakes each offering its own adventure and excellent fishing.
