Wagonhammer Interpretive Horseback Trail Ride:  “Proceeding on Overland.” From Wagonhammer Springs you’ll ride up the canyon to reach officially marked portions of the trail that remain virtually as they were when traveled by a discouraged but determined Corps of Discovery.  You’ll see and experience the mountain trail, crossing ridges and high saddles far above the river, riding gentle, sturdy mountain horses. You’ll learn about Clark’s reconnaissance along the river he named “Lewis’s River” and the start of the alternate journey over the rugged Lost Trail Pass. This is an intermediate trail and no riding experience is necessary.

½ day………………………………………………..$65.00 per person

Full day with lunch……………………………….$135.00 per person

Lewis & Clark
The Lemhi and Salmon River Valleys offer a rich historic heritage of the Lewis & Clark Expedition.  Opportunities to retrace the steps of Lewis and Clark in areas where little has changed since they were here, along with the Lemhi Valley being Sacajawea’s home land, continues to provide one of the most rewarding and authentic portions of the entire L & C Trail.

The Corps of Discovery entered the Lemhi Valley on August 13, 1805 with the intent of exploring the feasibility of navigating the Salmon River in hopes of reaching the Pacific Coast.  They wisely decided that no dugout canoe could safely navigate the Salmon River's rapids, so they changed their course and opted for a somewhat less hazardous, but equally difficult dry-land route.
At the time of the Lewis and Clark Bi-Centennial in 2004 the Bureau of Land Management and the US Forest Service issued permits to Rawhide Outfitters allowing us to conduct tours to aid those interested in one of the most remarkable and productive military expeditions and scientific explorations in American history.  Please allow us to guide you in retracing those steps of long ago with either a van tour on Lemhi Pass or trail ride at Wagonhammer Springs.
Lemhi Pass Van Tour:  “The Continental Divide, at last!” This adventure tour starts at the **Sacajawea Interpretive Center located in the town of Salmon where there is a brief introduction given by our L & C interpreter Mike Crosby.  We proceed on to Lemhi Pass in our 15 passenger van with brief historic stops along the way.  On top of Lemhi Pass is where Meriwether Lewis became the first European-American to cross the continental divide.  We then proceed on to the sites of other firsts:  the first time an American flag was unfurled west of the Rockies, and the expedition’s first encounter with Sacajawea’s people, the Lemhi Shoshoni. A picnic style lunch is provided and served under beautiful shady pine trees.  Restroom facilities are available. Although this historic area has changed very little in 200 years, an air conditioned van and sumptuous lunch will make your journey through it quite different from that experienced by the Corps of Discovery.  Walking parts of the trail will be an option.

Full day with lunch…………………………………$105.00 per person

“We just got home yesterday from our vacation, and I wanted to send this off to you right away to tell you how much we enjoyed our trip to Lemhi Pass. We both felt that this was the highlight of our trip.  Mike Crosby really impressed us and was the perfect guide.  His knowledge seemed endless.  We both felt that it was a special experience to have had the opportunity to be guided by him.  We also wanted to say thanks to you for the terrific lunch.  Everything was delicious, but especially those homemade granola bars!”  Steve Carr

“Justin led us on the most amazing tour of a portion of the Lewis & Clark Trail. I wanted to write and express my deep appreciation to him for the enthusiasm he brought to our day.  He was very attentive to our needs and interests throughout the day.  It was clear his objective was to optimize our experience, we really appreciate Justin’s efforts.  My wife and I have taken many tours over our 62 years and through every continent except Africa.  We have never had a better guide on ANY of our tours!  Thank you for making this such a memorable experience!”  Don Wozniak

Saddle to Paddle Interpretive Tour: This is a delightful combination adventure of experiencing the “lay of the land” by doing the ½ day trail ride as described above, having a picnic lunch at the trailhead and then enjoying a smooth scenic float trip on the beautiful Salmon River where more interesting facts and stories will be shared about the famous explorers.
